Artist's Comments

This is my final for Illustration I. We had to come up with a fictional tea flavor for the Celestial Seasonings Tea company and then make a box for it using a real box as a template. My tea is called Baba Yaga's Blue Rose Tea. Baba Yaga is a russian witch who, if you couldn't tell already, flies around in a mortar using a pestle as a rudder and lives in a house on chicken legs. There was a story that the reason why she's an old witch is because she ages every time someone asks her a question, and the only way for her go grow younger is to drink a tea brewed from blue roses.

If I saw that on a tea box, I'd probably buy the tea. The colors are really good.

You had better have gotten an awesome grade on this. This is truly beautiful work. I wish I had the chance to take an illustration course!

My only teeny bit of criticism is that her head is too big for her body. But it works well with the overall effect of the illustration, and my hunch is that it's deliberate (am I right?). However, it is also a trend I have noticed in your work overall, so I'm curious as to your own opinion of it.

But like I said - gorgeous work, *beautiful* line quality, as always, and the the painting job is immaculate. I know *I'd* give you an A+.

Thanks!

Yeah... the head thing. It's just a really bad habit. However, I'm told that a good artist will know how to distort proportions of the figure (or anything else for that matter, at least i guess so) so that it looks right when it's reproduced, such as making heads bigger. I did it accidentally and you're right, it's wrong. However, in terms of the reproduction, it might actually be a good thing that I'm doing it.

And that was me validating a bad habit.

great job, I can see it as a Celestial Seasonings tea indeed! The title is what drew me in as I vaguely recall that Baba Yaga ate children...so I was curious as to what this was. I like the further back story of her and fantastic idea for the illustration!

Thanks! Originally I was just going to do something about a general "witches brew" when the project was first assigned, but then I remembered something about her and tea made from blue roses, so I thought it was too perfect to pass up.

hehe, now that's a catchy title, totally sounds like something you'd want to drink. I vaguely remember a Baba Yaga from a Russian fairytale I used to have called Vasilisa. Anyhoo, those roses are so well defined, my eyes are drawn right to them. I love her face, almost pretty in a way...nice details. Her hair is great, subtle hints at specificity, and all flowy. Wonderful job with the environment. lol, please forgive me if this doesn't make sense. I just went on a commenting spree, and my brain conked out somewhere in the middle of this comment. :lmao: Very nice work!

Lol I actually understood everything perfectly. Thanks for the comment!
